I love this verse, it serves as a great minder to me to Submit, Resist and to draw near to God all the time, especially when battling with addiction or when we feel under pressure or tempted to fit into this world. We need to remember why we resist is because the devil knows he cannot have victory over us if we are prepared to do battle against him. The Bible tells us that we need only put on the full armour of God (Ephesians 6:11-18) to be fully protected from evil and to actively resist it.

A humble person always arranges himself under God’s authority and we must submit to God because we need His resources. The word “submit” was a military term.  James puts his language in terms of warfare because we are at war with the devil.  A humble person submits to his Commander-in-Chief.  By giving allegiance to the Lord, the devil will flee from us.  When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He resisted Satan by quoting Scripture. We must study the word and store its wisdom in our hearts in order to discern good and evil, and to be equipped to resist.

Resist the devil and he will flee from you… The hardest advice of all, because it is a subject of choice between self-will and God’s will. The devil cannot conquer you if you continue to resist. Strong as he is, God never permits him to conquer the man who continues to resist him.

Resistance requires us to actively pull away and to draw near to God, and He will draw near to you… Verse 8 is one of the most comforting passages in all of scripture, as it should be. We are not meant to simply resist the devil, but instead run to and find refuge in God. Drawing near to God is spending time with Him, worshiping Him, praying and talking to Him, inviting Him into every aspect of our lives.

Invite Jesus into your lives today.

I prefer the KJV, so I used that translation for today’s printable. This art will be perfect to decorate your home or office!

  1. Great printable. Just came across your blog tonight. Must say I'm a bit surprised to see a bible verse suddenly pop up. Sydney (Australia) has just come out of lockdown today (after around 4 months of quarantine). That's 4 months of no church, no singing, no meeting together. I live alone so didn't expect to see any spiritual encouragement coming from a different corner of the planet. Thanks for this.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment. I am so happy it could give some encouragement. The Lord will never leave nor forsake you. God Bless.
