HOW TO WEAR VELVET

To be honest, I have been crushing on velvet for sometime now and it is only getting more serious with the slight chill setting in the air.  I can’t seem to get enough of the silky smooth texture of velvet.  The classic fabric instantly gives off an elegant look and can dress up even the simplest of outfits.  Velvet fabric is luxurious and is a statement fabric which everybody sort of likes, yet it’s not a staple of everyone’s wardrobe.  Adding a simple velvet piece to your look can instantly make your look more romantic and glitzy without being too over-the-top.  From velvet scrunchies to velour joggers, the cozy-luxe finish will instantly glam up any outfit.

SHORT HISTORY OF VELVET

Velvet is believed to have originated from Eastern culture with pile weaves from 2000 BC Egyptian civilisation.  At the time, the technique to create velvet was so complex that it was available only to royalty and the very rich.  At one time, blue velvet was reserved only for use by the French king, his family, and favoured subjects.

Other samples were found in China dating back as far as 400 BC but while the thought was there, the technique was not, and it was not until the Renaissance between 1400-1600 that production of this woven tufted fabric was at its peak.  Needless to say velvet was being fabricated in the Middle East and the Far East long before Europe started producing it.

From the 1970s onwards, velvet was a favourite among celebrities, making it highly desired and easily accessible to popular culture, and has come back time and time again as the next big fashion trend.

HOW TO WEAR VELVET

Velvet is generally considered a fabric that is better suited to fall/winter styles, yet more and more velvet is being rocked in summer.  How, by wearing a light weight fabric velvet,  choosing a light colour palette, and using summer styles with cute straps.

Wearing a velvet blazer is probably one of the easiest way to wear the trend because you can combine a velvet blazer with just about everything: jeans, elegant pants, dresses and skirts.

Velvet dresses are very on trend and look super cute paired with flats, sneakers, or ankle boots.  Keep your accessories simple and minimalistic because velvet is what you want to make the outfit.

Velvet is visually a heavy fabric and when it is paired with more delicate fabrics for balance like satin, silk and lace, can look amazing together.

If a full head to toe look seems too scary, then dip your toe into the trend with a single piece. Velvet boots worn with skinny jeans feels a little more rock n roll than opulent.

Pick a piece in dark shades of blue, green, brown, black, and even red - it’ll suit you without a doubt and you will get more wear out of a dark shade vs a hot pink one.

Its not a good idea getting a velvet garment wet.  If it does do not apply pressure, as this can often flatten the pile and you also don't want to iron velvet garment, it could burn the fibres or flatten the pile.  Rather hang velvet garments in the bathroom and steam the garment to remove any wrinkles.
